In the 1880’s through the early 1900’s many people were not thrilled with the society of America and the imperialism and industrialization that were taking place. In reaction many citizens started reforms confronting the problems caused by industrialization and imperialism. They clearly stated a change was wanted and needed. To name a few reforms, there was the Sherman Antitrust act, Interstate Commerce Act, Muckrakers, Meat Inspection Act, The Oregon System, and the 16th through 19th amendments. I believe the Muckrakers to have played a huge role in the Progressive era. The expression “muckraker” came on because they “raked”, or brought up, exposed, the “muck”, the unfairness and injustices, covered up by society. (McGraw-Hill. The American Journey, Student Edition. New York: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2004. pg. 613) Muckrakers were Journalists who helped expose the true inequality and injustices. They wrote newspaper and magazine articles that told of the truth of trusts, prison conditions, the tax system, pension practices and food processing, among others. ("Muckrakers." United States History. 19 Dec. 2009. http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h920.html) The Muckrakers made it known to the citizens what was actually going on. It helped to anger the people enough to want to do something about it. Though some stories may have been exaggerated, it got the people thinking. It got them to see how it really is. Without them I believe the issues would not have gotten the type of attention that was needed. A reported for the McClure’s Magazine, Lincoln Steffens, wrote articles about corrupt machine politics in New York, Chicago, and other cities. His pieces composed in a book, The Shame of the Cities. (McGraw-Hill. The American Journey, Student Edition. New York: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2004. pg. 613) And with his writings this built up the demand for urban reform making the desire stronger. Meaning to provoke sympathy for the workers in the meatpacking industry, by writing a novel known as The Jungle, illustrating the horrors of the meatpacking industry, Upton Sinclair actually caused a major uproar. Because of his book the Meat Inspection Act was passed, which lead to the Pure Food and Drug Act, making it illegal to sell harmful food, and made it necessary to have accurate labeling on food and medicine. Another notable Muckraker would have to be David Graham Phillips. He wrote an article in the Cosmopolitan, "The Treason of the Senate". This article was a bitter reflection of political corruption. His article goaded President Roosevelt anger. Roosevelt believed that some of the journalists/muckrakers were going too far. But despite agitating Roosevelt his writing created a drive that would lead to the adoption of the 17th Amendment. ("Muckrakers." Well here's the thing on December 16, 2009 I decited to start writing my own book which is called Last Quarter and the preface and first chapter that im working on is going just great. But the problem is on December 17, 2009, one of oy colses freinds named Cassie had hung herself and I just feel so deperessed. so I was woundering if anyone out there can help me try to move on and let me finish the story. How do I go on with my story when my freind just killed herself?
In July 2009, I sent a friend request to a young man on facebook because we shared the same last name and he accepted it. I never made any steps to contact him until Oct 2009, when he posted a comment saying that he has been deployed to Afghanistan. I sent him my prayers--that was it. About a week later, he private messaged me and we started to express thoughts and beliefs and noticed that we shared a lot in common. Well, that turned into a infatuation on his part and I followed in his footsteps. On Dec. 16, I sent him a private message, and 4 days has gone by without him responding to me. I go to his myspace page and I've seen him online the whole 4 days that he's gone missing from face book. I know he's ok. Question: Should I take a hint and just let it be, or should I send another private message asking him why he hasn't responded to me. Please be honest but not brutal. Hello, friends, I am going to study abroad. That requires a motivation letter. I would like you to check it, if it's possible, because you're native speakers. Here it goes: I am into law for a number of reasons. First, it helps to make sure that everyone has equal rights; we can protect the innocent and punish the guilty ones. Knowing the law is a key to a fulfilling life, because many people do not know what rights the have got. I was encouraged to take interest in law by some people: a friend, that has successfully graduated and now works in a lawyer’s office, friends of my parents, that are lawyers and judges – they never forget to tell me about peculiarities of their jobs, strange cases and their work, that is always interesting. They told me, that I would be a great lawyer because of my personal qualities: I am eloquent, insightful and I am always in search for answers to the questions that interest me. In winter of 2009 I finished my courses of ELSA [European Law Students Association] that were arranged by students and senior lecturers. Further more, I had unofficially worked as a clerk in a lawyer’s office. These activities helped me choose the field of action that I want for my life. I have seen a lot in my life. I have always wanted to be independent, able to take care of myself. I have worked in several places: construction site, sawmill. I had even created some websites. Gymnasium that I am studying at sent me to do social work, so I did 120 hours in Kedainiai Social Community home [people with mental illnesses, alcoholics, drug addicts stay there]. It helped me expand my ken, gain self-confidence. My studies at school sometimes used to go down because of my extracurricular activities. This year, the last year at school, I pulled myself together, set my priorities and I am very happy about my results. During my free time, I am into a lot of different activities: hanging out with friends, reading books [mostly detectives, such as Agatha Christie, John Grisham, sir Conan Doyle], watching movies with a deeper meaning [my favourite: “The Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King]. I love music, mostly hip hop or rock; I also play an acoustic guitar. Furthermore, I love sports, such as snowboarding, boxing, basketball. I have a red belt in Shidokan Karate. I sincerely hope, that knowledge that I will acquire in your university, my personal qualities, such as being active, responsible, communicative, proactive, ability to quickly imbibe new information, will help me successfully prepare for a lawyers career. My grandad purchased the tickets on his card so according to the original rules he has to go and show his ID and credit card to get me in. I proposed a girl and she fell in love with me after trails of trying hard to win her heart. I love the girl so much but today! One particular evening she called and the convo went as: Angie : ... Just want to know about life. Danie, i want to tel l you something. Danie: My life is fantab... and your, my Angie. What is that you want to tell me? Angie : i wanted to tell you that ... Daniel: carry one, i am listening. Just shoot! Angie: No! Forget, i am not ready. As a mentally active guy, i knew that she wanted to tell me something, so mething like: " i lied to you, i had a boyfriend" Danie: Tell me anything, i wont be angry at you. I gues you wanted to tell me that you have a boyfriend beside me. she kept quite and listened to her self before giving me a plain answer. Angie: Akon man (my nick name) i love you so much and i did not want to upset you. What you said is true. I lied to you when a lastly said, man have i none. Danie: Cool! i understand. So it looks like they have been in a relationship for for three years and i only came to try to soil their apple-cart late in November, 2009. I called Angie yesterday and she was like, Please do burst when i tell you this. I tried to ask if she can crack the story. She cried and told me that she can not. Well, before she gave the key, i promised to support her through what ever she is going through, i promised to give her advice. On the last minuite, she said that she is recently vomited, she tend to have wet breasts, she sleeps a lot and she missed her period. Trying to be cool, i took it mentally and not emotionally. I asked her whom does she suspect being the father, i haven't selp with a girl before, not you or the other. By boyfriend, she replaid. After few minuites of craying she told me that they have had sex, using a condom and it got torn in the process and when they checked the plastic, it was stainless. That event happened in November the 26th. She told me that she called the guy and told him that she suspects that she is pregnant. She told the lad that she wanna do abortion and he rufused and after some few days, the agreed on the action. So yesterday she asked if what to do and this is what i said: should it happen that you are pregnant, do not abort the poor child. It is inocent and thus can not harvest bad reppications of your actions. What if god asks you, "i gave you a gift and what did you do with it?". Told her that abortion is murder, beside, you where not raiped. i do not trust Angie (17) that she is telling the truth. What do you think, guys. And what if it is just, am i doing wrong to end the relationship and when is the right time to do so?
